How to purchase names

The Arweave Name System (ArNS) provides a user-friendly and flexible way to purchase names that can be used within the Arweave ecosystem.

The process of acquiring an ArNS name is not just about owning a digital asset; it's about integrating into a resilient, adaptive, and growing ecosystem.

Whether you choose to lease or permanently own a name, ArNS offers a structured yet flexible approach to digital ownership on the permaweb.

Here are some things to keep in mind when purchasing an ArNS name:

Years or Centuries

  • Leasing or Permanent Purchase: Users can choose to either lease a name for up to 5 years or purchase it permanently

  • Purchasing Options: An ArNS name can either be purchased instantly or through an auction. The total number of characters in the name determines the way it will be sold:

Registering and Undernames

  • Registering a Name: To own a name like samantha, users must register it in the ArNS Registry.

  • Undername Feature: With each name registration, 10 undernames are included. Undernames are like subdomains but use an underscore _ instead of a dot . for separation from the root domain. Users can purchase additional undernames as needed, up to a maximum of 10,000 per ArNS name.

  • Name Records: Each record in the registry includes a pointer to its Arweave Name Token (ANT) Smart Contract address, lease end time, and undername allocation.
