Ar.io lets provenance systems publish cryptographic hashes, content credentials, and soft-binding indexes as permanent records. Its gateways cache, index, and serve those records, and anyone can check a retrieved record against its permanent original.

This is useful for news organizations, AI platforms, stock media agencies, and device manufacturers whose provenance records must survive publisher shutdowns and platforms that strip embedded metadata.

Why provenance records need durable access

Most provenance data is not lost because it is deleted. It becomes unavailable because repositories go offline, platforms remove metadata, or the organizations maintaining records are acquired, shut down, or subjected to external pressure.

Once anchored through ar.io, a provenance record cannot be overwritten. Independent gateways can cache, retrieve, and verify it through infrastructure, ownership, and policy changes.

Tamper-evident provenance anchoring

Use ar.io to anchor cryptographic hashes of content credentials as immutable records. Later checks can establish that a specific claim existed at a specific point in time and detect whether the referenced record has changed.

Recoverable provenance when metadata is stripped

Social platforms and messaging systems routinely remove embedded metadata from media files. Ar.io enables soft-binding indexes that link watermarks and content fingerprints to provenance records, allowing authenticity information to be recovered even when original credentials are no longer embedded in the file.

Provenance that survives organizational change

Repositories operated by individual companies are subject to acquisitions, shutdowns, and policy shifts. Records published through ar.io do not depend on the original repository continuing to operate.

Independent verification without trusting the provider

Traditional provenance repositories require trust in the operator. ar.io gateway responses can be checked against the permanent source instead of accepting the repository operator's copy on authority.

Records independent of a repository contract

With ar.io, the permanent source record does not expire with a repository subscription, and independent gateways provide more than one way to retrieve it.
